Gabby Giffords keeps up efforts for Gun Control.

The former Arizona Congresswoman, Gabby Giffords, vwas shot in the head about 30 months ago. She recently met in New Hampshire with the parents of the children killed in the Sandy Hook massacre. They gathered to talk strategy, how to get Congress talking about Gun Control again.

Giffords, a Democrat, has become the face of the Gun Control movement. She is still recovering from injuries incurred in a 2011 attack that killed 6 others. Her and her husband, Mark Kelly, have been travelling the nation encouraging states to defy the NRA. They are trying to gain traction for legislation to expand background checks. They would also like to push for legislation for Assault Weapons Bans and High Capacity Magazine Bans.

Giffords recently formed Super-PAC and related non-profit group have ambitious plans to expabd their political clout in 2014. The group is known as Americans for Responsible Solutions and they are expected to raise $20 million for political activities and ads for the next election and the next Gun Control Vote. Up to now New York City Mayor Micheal Bloomberg has provided much of the financial support for Gun Control advocacy. His group, Mayors Against Illegal Guns, has spent more than $12 million in an effort to pressure lawmakers in several states.

Despite Giffords and Bloomberg’s effort, they reportedly have not won any more votes in Congress. It seems as if the Bill has truly bogged down and will not move forward. In the lead up to the Manchin/Toomey Gun Bill vote, the NRA poured close to $400,000 into the Senators who voted against the bill. Republicans have been bashing Mayor Bloomberg for throwing his money around. It seems as if the NRA is uncomfortable going up against another lobbyist with just as much money.

Since Sandy Hook, over 4,500 have been killed by gun violence. Children have shot other children and people have been shot at gun shows. The NRA and other gun lobbyist use fear to mobilize gun rights activists. I am for children being able to live, as well as stopping at least some of the gun violence. If 20 murdered First Graders doesn’t sway Congress, what will? It seems they only support things when it hits close to home. I hope this is not what it takes, hopefully it won’t take another Elementary School massacre either.

NRA paid Senators to vote against Gun Control.

All but 3 of the Senators who torpedoed gun control measures received money from firearm lobbyist, according to new analysis by the Guardian and the Sunlight Foundation. Some, like Republican Dan Coats,  registered donations as recently as 3 weeks ago. President Obama and Gabby Giffords,  have accused the Senate of being in thrall of gun money.

Campaign disclosure show the group who voted against gun control were direct recipients of gun money. The NRA alone has given as much $800,000 to 40 of the Senators who voted against the amendment. Much of that money was given in the leadup to the last election, according to the Sunlight Foundation figures. Information for the period since the Sandy Hook shouting is harder to come by because many quarterly filings due out on last Tuesday have been delayed by the suspected ricing attack on President Obama and members of Congress.

Documents also show a surge in the NRAs lobbying arm in the months following Sandy Hook. They registered a record $2.7 million in cash during January and February. Further disclosures showing the scale of recent donations, particularly to politicians in the House of Representatives are expected soon.

This certainly wasn’t the will if the people. But the influence of the NRA and big money apparently trumps the will of the people. The proposed amendment had nothing to do with the 2nd Amendment, the Bill if Rights or good people who own guns. It was an effort to protect the public,  especially innocent children, from those who use guns to kill people. The right to bear arms is not the right to kill people.

Senate majority leader Harry Reissue effectively pulled the bipartisan gun control bill after the background check amendment failed to gain enough support. He and other Democrats vowed to renew their push for new gun laws in the months ahead. Both sides of the debate, were gearing up for a protracted legal battle that could last through the next Congressional election. Democrats seemed to acknowledge the amendments failure meant they would not be able to pass any gun bill in the short term. Of course opponents, Republicans and a couple Democrats, said the measure would infringe upon 2nd Amendment rights. They also.say background checks would lead to a gun registry.

This bill is a slap in the face of the American people. It also is a signal that our Democracy is failing us. The NRA us protecting the interest of gun manufacturers, not the people. The fact that these Senators voted against may not even harm their electable status. Many do not face reelection for several years and they are relying on the American public having a short memory. We will make sure no one forgets.

Gun Control needs to be done.

This week the chance of Congress even discussing universal background checks came to a screeching halt. 40 Republican Senators and 5 Democrats decided we don’t need to do anything about gun violence by filibustering the Manchin-Toomey bill. It wasn’t the strongest piece of legislation but it was a start. In doing so the NRA defeated 90% of Americans, temporarily.

One tired arguement used to justify the filibuster kills me. Why put background checks in place, criminals will find another way to get a gun. This arguement imneadiately collapses in on itself. By saying this Republicans, conservatives, Tea Party and the NRA are essentially saying we should not have any laws. No spore limit because people speed anyway. No laws to stop theft because people steal anyway. No laws against murder because people kill people anyway. I am sure you see where I am going with this.

It is because of simple-minded arguements like this that people are killer daily. What if 3 more kids survived Sandy Hook because the maniac needed to change magazines. Isn’t that how they stopped Gabby Godforsaken shooter from killing more. These are common sense legislations that save lives. Oh and before I forget to mention, did you know the 46 Senators who voted no on background checks received almost $8 million from the NRA.

So obviously money means more that kids. The right to bear arms is more important than LIFE, LIBERTY AND THE PURSUIT OF HAPPINESS. I am sorry Republicans but you cannot pick and choose what parts of the Constitution you like to follow. I watched the movie Killing Me Softly today. It was not a particularly good movie but near the end there was a line I liked. America is not a community, it is a company. That is not verbatim, but you catch my drift.
