What happened to our Democracy?

What happened to the great country of America? Why do we not prosper like we did in the 1950s-1970s? What caused the greatest nation in earth to come back to the pack? If you listen to Republicans it is all liberals fault, their policies and entitlements. If you listen to Democrats it is all conservatives fault, horrible policies, war mongering and the trickle down economy. But what caused our current predicament. This is an average high school educated Americans opinion on our decline.

America was very successful in the decades following WWII. There are several reasons for this. I believe first and foremost was the conditions other countries were in. Germany, England, Italy, France, Japan and most of Europe was decimated by the war. This essentially left the world at Americas mercy. We were the only developed country that wasnt decimated and we took full advantage of that. Second was the rise of labor unions. They leveled the playing field with corporations causing better pay and benefits. Workers were happy and American made meant something. Third was the gap in income. It put us in a position where employees believed in their employers. Corporations werent cutting corners for a profit.

When CEO pay began to grow quicker then employee pay we saw the beginning of the decline. Companies off shoring work to make a higher profit despite products that were not made very well. Union membership particularly in the early 2000s declined sharply. NAFTA wad created to help Americans but it worked against us. This was the beginning of the end. Then banks began to work against us. I to this day do not completely understand what they did, but they destroyed pensions, credit, peoples lives and the American economy. Too big too fail and too rich too prosecute.

You may ask “Why all this about the economy and jobs?” It all contributed to the political climate we live in today. The decimation of unions took away one of the major checks on corporations power. Easieast example is Walmart. They make billions in profits, get all of their product from overseas and essentially pay minimum wage. They typically cap employees hours so they dont have to offer benefits. All the while their employees are in every government program that is offered because of the low pay. Walmart is one of the largest employers in the country. Any attempt at unionizing is dealt with harshly. People getting fired, hours cut amongst other things. Workers no longer recieve living wages, all the while corporations and the super wealthy gain more and more of the pie.

Why does any of that matter? Well that is quite easy. 94%. 94% of the time the politician with the most money wins. 94%, a ridiculous number. That means that the people with money get their politician of choice. That means that said politician then works for the cause of the wealthy. That causes an ever growing gap in income inequality. When corporate backed politicians are in charge, corporations essentially are in charge. Take the Stand Your Ground Law, a mess of a law. ALEC writes papers called model legislation, which is a bill that is given to their bought congressmen, who then work to get it passed. Congress no longer works for the people, it works for its puppet master.

Money has bought our government, big money, corporations and super wealthy. These people have destroyed our democracy. We are now at the mercy of our corporate overlords. It is funny to think that not only do you buy their product in a store, but we all bow at the altar of the wealthy. This is what these wannabe oligarchs, feudalists or monarchs want from us. For a while the people were silent, but many are waking up. But it is too late? Can we retake our democracy? Is America the new Rome? I certainly hope not. But in my opinion we are balanced on a precipice.

I realize that this is not the most concise description of our fall. But just open your eyes and look around. People stand up for a tax evader like Cliven Bundy but demonize Trayvon Martin and Mike Brown. When was racism so prevelant, the 1950s. How about the constant attack on women? It seems like a calculated attack to keep rich men in charge of things. The election of President Obama, a black man, seems to upset the apple cart. Why else would certain people say their first and most important priority was to make him a one term president. Democracy is not conservatism or liberalism, it is a combination of all of them. We need to overturn Citizens United, put term limits on Senators, Representatives and Supreme Court Justices. We need to be able to assess their jobs and have the right to immeadiatly fire them. Our democracy is on the line. Lets save it.

Republicans are not job creators, useless law creators.

Over the last 5 years Republicans have done little to help the economy and in fact have impeded its recovery. The Sequester alone has cost several hundred thousand jobs; not to mention all the furloughs. They have worked with corporations to stop the will of the people and have made a mockery of our Government.

They believe in deregulation which directly led to the Financial Collapse, the Great Recession and the Housing Crisis. They have fought against reform in all of these markets, hurting our economy. They have not supported American ideals, leaning more toward a bigoted, short sighted corporate view of America. They have shot down Jobs Bill and Veterans Jobs Bills to concentrate on Anti-Abortion and Voter Regulation Laws.

The only way to make the ACA work is to work together. Republicans refuse and would rather destroy the middle class and social safety nets to prevent Tax Reform. They support the Citizens United Supreme Court decision but refuse to hold corporations accountable for their illegal actions. I and most other Americans do not think anyone is above the law or deserves a free ride. That is why not prosecuting CEOs of Too Big Too Fail Banks is a slap in America’s face.

I dont think our founding fathers imagined an American governed by corporations. Nor did they envision a Congress that would work against the countries best interests. But thus is where we are. Knuckleheads screaming for secession, yet they recieve more government money than anyone else. This is a country being held hostage by a party throwing a 4 year temper tantrum. Time for the rich white party to grow up.

Why isn’t Congress even talking about Gun Control?

On December 14, 2012 a man entered Sandy Hook Elementary School. He went on to shoot 26 people, includ ing 20 children. He used an AR-15, with 30 round magazines. After this happened Democrats and President Obama were intent on passing some sort of Gun Control Reform passed. They were stopped by the NRA and the money they used to lobby Republican Senators and even a few Democrats.

The Manchin/Toomey Bill was bipartisan legislation that improved universal background checks and prosecuted anyone found guilty of creating a gun registry. It wasn’t perfect but it was an improvement over our current system. It was stopped ghost because of a loss in a Filibuster vote, 54-45, 5 Republicans voted yes and 5 Democrats voted no. That was the end of the Gun Control conversation.

Now 7 months after Sandy Hook the conversation is dead. About 4,500 people have been killed by gun violence since then. More children have killed with guns then terrorist attack deaths on American soil in that time. Yet we seem to have accepted defeat and conceded to the NRA and the Koch Brothers. Our form of government was defeated by corporations and lobbyist. Democracy in this case seems to have failed us.

To put this in perspective, you have to register a car and get insurance in order to drive it. You don’t have to do either to get a gun. To buy a house, you have to have an inspection, they thoroughly look into your credit history and you have to have insurance. None of the above for guns. Republicans are against sex education for kids, but are fine giving them a gun. To me this is perplexing. Guns are meant to kill people, homes and cars are not.

So why aren’t we talking about this? Is it tge manufactured IRS and Benghazi scandals? Maybe the focus on Immigration Reform? Maybe Congress just doesn’t care? Whatever the reason, it needs to change. It us a discussion we need to have. The Second Amendment meant more when we were establishing ourselves as a country. Not so much now. My question is for Congress. If we don’t address Gun Control now, then when?

Supreme Court has gouged the Civil Rights Act of 1964.

The decision the Supreme Court made today gouges the Civil Rights Act. The Conservative leaning, at leadt that is how it seems, really dropped the ball on this. The Act was put in place in order to protect African-Americans right to vote and make it more difficult for states found guilty at one point of making it difficult for people to vote.

The truly perplexing part of this is what made the Justices come to this decision. The 2012 Election was marred by Voter I.D. Laws and other restrictive Voter Laws. ALEC teamed with the Republican party in an attempt to steal the election by eliminating the poor and minorities from voting with these Laws. Across the country several Republican lawmakers said that these Voter I.D. Laws would cause them to win the election. Isn’t that evidence enough to not just uphold this act, but possibly even stregthen it. But to weaken it, that doesn’t make sense.

Republicans and Democrats are concerned about elections in Iraq, Iran and everywhere else being truly Democratic, yet they throw our Constitution out the window in their desperation to win an election. Voting is the backbone of our Democratic government and society. To take that away from anyone, because you want to win an election is patently unAmerican. But our Constitution only matters to Republicans when it works in their favor.

President Obama spoke of protecting our Constitutional right to vote and how no one has a right to take it away. This Voter Fraud that Republicans talk about is almost non-existent, 2 or 3 cases nationwide in the last election. Welcome to corporate America where a lobbyist is more important than a citizen, but according to the Supreme Court and Republicans, corporations are people too. They just do not held respobsible like a citizen.

ALEC, corporate evil that is losing its strangle hold on government.

ALEC is a group of corporations that gather together write bills and convince Congress to pass them for them. They are one of the stronger lobbying arms in our country. Several Senators sit on the ALEC board. They supported the Stand Your Ground Law in Florida and similar laws in other states.

It is a symptom of the corporate government we have. Corporations pour money into government through lobbyist groups in attempt to influence votes and bills that are written. What do corporations have to do with government? Does anyone believe that corporations have the country or the peoples best interests in mind? Private corporations are only concerned with profits, at all costs. A little boy being shot or 20 first graders being shot cannot affect profits.

A corporation has more input into the laws that govern us then we the people do. It is all about money and a conglomerate like ALEC has more than enough. Although many corporations have been leaving ALEC because of their extreme right wing agenda. They are involved in Gun Control, Abortion, Privatization of Public Schools, Tax Reform and Bank Reform, just to name a few. What interest do they have in any of these things? MONEY? It runs our politicians and helps create the bills that affect everyday life.

We the people need to take the power back from greedy politicians and corporations. If we can do that President Obama and Democrats have a chance at fixing our messed up system. Republicans like it this way, it gums up the works and stops progress, making the party in charge look worse. That is their main objective, to hurt the Democrats at all expenses. It needs to be stopped, bringing sanity to our government.

Why doesnt anyone understand what Top Secret means?

Edward Snowden, whether he did the right thing or not, is a criminal. In order to get a Top Secret clearance you have to sign an agreement, if you hreak the agreement you are technically guilty of treason. There are many things that the public should not know. Should we know the President’s exact schedule? Knowing where he is at any time. NO! Should we know where our nuclear weapons are or the codes to fire them? Of course not.

Anything and everything you do on the internet leaves a trail. Someone can always find out what you are doing. At least now it goes before a court, the FISA Court. When George W. Bush was in charge they tapped phones without court authority. The government does get a court order in order to get your phone and internet data. They go before the court every 3 months to renew the coury order. This is Top Secret, which means it affects our country in some important way.

Corporations have access to all of our data. They do this to learn how to market to us. Why is it ok for a corporation to do it, but not the government. The 4th Amendment is not being torn apart. As far as I can tell it is within the Amendment. They are getting a court order to get the data. It is not breaking any laws. But Republicans and their cohorts are trying to paint President Obama as an evil man and Democrats as do nothings.

The simple fact is that no law is being broken. As much as Republicans, who constantly violating civil liberties, cry about it, it is not illegal. But there is a portion of this country that hates him because of his skin color and will go against him regardless of what he does. This is the America we live in.

2014, the year we remove Governor Corbett from office.

Governor Tom Corbett took office in 2010 and no one really knows how. I don’t know anyone who voted for him. Pennsylvania generally votes democrat. We voted for President Obama by about 6% points. Corbett has a pretty spotty record since taking over as governor and he is behind in the polls to any Democratic challenger.

He has cut funding to education, instead of taxing Natural Gas Drilling, which could easily make up the money for education. He has been implicated in receving illegal benefits from these companies. He has also recieved over $1 million from Natural Gas Drilling Companies since becoming governor. Under his watch Pennsylvania is ranked 49 in the country in job creation.

His once popular privatization of the State’s Liquor Stores is losing steam. His Pension Reform Plan has been deemed unconstitutional. It seems every move that he makes is wrong for the state. As a typical Republican he is blaming the people for the lack of jobs, saying that companies cannot hire people because they cannot pass a drug test. He is out of touch with his constituents.

Democrats in the state have attempted to keep his radical agenda in check. Voting to keep his more extreme measures in check, while attempting to work with him on his more bipartisan bills. His attempt to give education money back the year before election stinks of desperation. Hopefully our state votes intelligently this time around and removes One Term Tommy from office. He is in office to help corporations make more money and protect them from responsibility. Just look at the Frackers who are free to do as they will. This is Corporate Pennsylvania now.
