What is the cause of polarization in American politics today!

Polarization in politics refers to the divergence of political attitudes ideological extremes. Most discussions about polarization refer to political parties and Democratic systems of government. Typically polarization results in moderate voices being silenced. The extremes in both parties take the lead, which ultimately causes the same in the population. In our political climate the Right Wing extremists have demonized compromise, referring to it as weakness. the polarization in our current political climate has ground our Democracy to a halt. This in turn has hurt the middle and lower class Americans. It has damaged any attempt to fix our infrastructure or deal with anything of political significance. Hopefully i can succinctly describe the cause of polarization today.

Gerrymandering, also known as redistricting has had a bit to do with it. when a sitting representative feels safe from the other side they tend to double down on more extremist views. This is a way to pander to a base. Gerrymandering is illegal in the United States. instead of drawing districts in lines that make sense, the districts are drawn to keep Republican districts safe by splitting up strong Democrat sectors. This has been on full display in states where Republicans are sitting in the majority or as Governors. In several states despite a Democrat winning the majority of the votes they lost the states because of the redistricting. As i said this was found to illegal many, many years ago, yet still happens.

Lobbying is another humongous cause.  The Sunshine Rules which came into being after Watergate created more transparency in committee meetings and recorded votes, also opened them up to special interest groups and lobb
yist. Which made it easier to figure out which Congressman were on the fence and needed a little push. This truly opened our Democracy up to the oligarchy our government has become. A perfect example of this phenomenon is when President Obama and Congress (Democrats) started working on the ACA. In the first week about 300 lobbyist from the health insurance industry descended on D.C. Look at who received these donations, it is public record, and you will understand the incredible disinformation about the ACA. Then throw the Citizen’s United decision into the mix and everything spins completely out of control. If anyone tells you that decision didn’t effect our Democracy is either lying or lives in a box. The candidate who raises  the most money wins 94% of the time. Obviously money has a very large effect on our Democracy.

Last but not least, the Media has pushed our representatives farther left or right. As a Liberal I wholeheartedly believe it is more Conservative media then Liberal media pushing the extremism. I watch both  sides and identify with little, if any thing the Conservative media says or believes. Republican Darrell Issa, who I personally believe is a disgrace to his Continue reading “What is the cause of polarization in American politics today!”

Fox News wins right to lie in appeals court, 11 years ago.

In 1996 Fox News sent 2 reporters out to do a story. When the reporters returned with their story, Fox News wanted them to report blatant lies which the reporters refused to do. The reporters won a 6 figure sum in court for being unlawfully terminated.  Fox News then filed an appeal. In February 2003 a Florida Court of Appeals overturned the original decision and unanimously agreed with Fox News that there was not an existing rule in the United States that required them to report the news TRUTHFULLY.

Bill O’Reilly paid lawyers to argue that it is Fox News right under the First Amendment to distort or falsify the news. So over the last 11 years the most watched news network has been feeding their viewers egregious lies. Why would a news outlet want to report untruths? Do you think they are trying to push their agenda on their viewers by distorting the news? Sadly those who watch Fox News swear by it. They take what is said on there as gospel. How much is actually true?

How many times over the years have Sean Hannity, Bill O’Reilly, Ann Coulter, Glenn Beck or Shepherd Smith shaped opinion with lies? Despite GDP growing rather than contracting Hannity continued to say that President Obama’s policy were hurting the economy. That despite overwhelming evidence that disputes his assertions. Why did Hannity further the biryher movement despite the President showing his birth certificate. Even after multiple fact checkers proved Hannity smear as false. But Fox News is Fair and Balanced. Right?

Bill O’Reilly insists that Attorney General Eric Holder is involved in the dismissal of criminal charges against the New Black Panther Party for voter intimidation. Despite it being a different administration that did so. He also denies telling viewers that President Obama hid news about Benghazi motives because he was running for reelection. Another outright lie. Then he said that no one on Fox News ever said you would go to jail if you didnt buy health insurance. Another blatant lie. This list goes on and on. I wanted to list examples, not have them overrun the point of this story. But it easily could have been overrun by examples.

As far as I know Fox News is the only news outlet that fought for the right to lie to their viewers. MSNBC has held several of their talking heads responsible for their actions recently. Requiring on air apologies, as well as the talking heads stepping down. Republicans run to Fox to spout their lies. They are never called out on them despite calling Democrats liars during interviews. I watch Fox News for a few minutes here and there just to see how and what they thinking. It is very disturbing to know that a news channel can fudge the news to further an agenda.

If we allow news outlets to shape the news to fit their agenda, how can we hold our elected officials accountable? How many Fox News viewers hate the President because of lies Fox News told about him? This is why we are in an era of such hyper-polarization. Instead of reporting news they feed the hate. How does that help America?

The disrespect of the Republican party and their media.

I took the time yesterday to watch Bill O’Reilly interview President Obama. I would say it was quite nice of the President to grant an interview to a man that perpetuates lies about him daily. Bill O’Reilly has complete disdain for President Obama and showed it by interrupting him continuously.  But it is hard to bully a man who will not let you.

When Bill O’Reilly interviews a conservative he lets them speak. Any liberal, Democrat or person who disagrees is attacked with impunity. I sometimes watch just to see how and what conservatives think. Most, not all, tend to bully their fellow debater. Cutting them off, speaking over them, not answering questions they are afraid of the public knowing the answer to or just plain changing the subject. Sadly this is the state of our government today. If you dont agree, you are the enemy, compromise viewed as weakness. Unfortunately this has caused our gridlock.

I watched Michelle Bachmann debate Bernie Sanders. It was a joke. A educated person debating a 5 year old. Michelle Bachmann used all the tactics above. When asked her stance on Social Security, she said she would gladly answer. Yet for some odd reason, she refused. She has over the years said some very questionable things. Why wouldnt she answer a question that many Americans want the answer to? Dont you think that is a bit conspicuous? Look at her record and that of Bernie Sanders. You will see who makes actual sense.

I then watched Paul Ryan in an interview. He said that President Obama is a lawless President. He said it is not the amount of executive orders but the scope. That President Obama is making laws and that is Congress’ job. But he stepped away from impeachment talk. If the President was lawless and disregarding the U S Constitution shouldn’t those sworn to uphold it hold him accountable? If he is lawless, should he not be impeached. Paul Ryan is another blowhard playing to his base.

Although this is a small thing, it drives me nuts. Conservatives refer to President Reagan, President Bush and Mr Obama. Neither of the first 2 are president anymore. President Obama is a sitting president. Afford him the same respect as Governor Romney, Senator Paul, this is disgraceful. President Obama was voted in by an overwhelming majority of people, HE IS THE PRESIDENT. Just because you disagree with his politics or are hurt by him being in office doesn’t diminish that he is PRESIDENT.

This doesn’t mean I agree with President Obama on everything he does. It does mean he is President, deal with it. Do not be disrespectful to the American people by hurting them to tarnish his legacy. We have been hurt enough by dirty bank practices and financial practices. It is time to stand with the people and the will of the people. But maybe your corporate sponsors wouldnt like that? You have to please your corporate masters.

Republican attempts to scandalize President Obama with IRS now moves on to the amount of White House visits.

The Republican desperation to connect President Obama to the IRS scandal is getting out of control. They are focusing on IRS commissioner Douglas Shulman’s name appearing 157 times on the White Housr public visitors record between 2009-2012. Bill O’Reilly called it a smoking gun and demanded Shulman explain under oath why he was there 157 times. He question the White House’s reason that the IRS was working closely with White House aides on the ACA. This is another Republican calling the White House and President Obama a liar. These people should have solid proof of wrong doing before accusations fly.

But public meeting schedules available for review show that very thing. Shulman was cleared primarily to meet with administration staffers involved in the implementation of the ACA (Obamacare). He was cleared 40 times to meet with the Director of the Office for Health Reform, 80 times for biweekly health reform deputy meetings and 20 others set up by aides involved with the ACA implementation efforts. 140 of his 157 supposed visits are taken care of right there and that’s before you add in meetings with the Office of Management and Budget personnel involved with the ACA.

Blurring the picture and making the numbers more difficult to attain are that just because he was cleared to go, doesn’t mean that he went. Routine events have a standing list of those cleared to attend, people whose appointments would have been logged and forwarded to the check in gate. There is no time of arrival information to confirm whether Shulman was actually there or not. His name is on the list, that is all Republicans have to go on.

Of the 157 events Shulman was cleared to attend, White House sign in records confirm only 11 events over the 2009-2012 period and the time of departure for 6 events during that period. When asked recently the reasons he might be at the White House Shulman responded ” Um, the Easter Egg Roll with my kids, questions about the administration of the tax policy they were thinking of, our budget, us helping the Department of Education streamline application process for financial aid.”

So again Beck, O’Reilly and Republican news outlets are getting carried away. They are part of the Republican machine trying to find a way to impeach a President they hate. The Republican attempts to scandalize the Obama administration and Democrats is already hurting them. President Obama’s approval numbers aren’t much worse than usual, only his approval numbers with Idependents have been affected, they are a tough crowd to keep on your side.

I am not sure if Republicans realize President Obama is in his second term. It seems as if they are trying to stop him from getting reelected. The Republican party would do well to focus on policy instead of searching for ways to tarnish a man’s name. Republicans voted 37 times to repeal the ACA, costing us about $50 million, that is not what I call fiscslly conservative. That could have funded the partially defunded Meals on Wheels for Seniors. But why work on policy when scandalizing someone is that much easier.

Our government is in sad shape.

When a Senator, in this case Republican Darreell Issa, calls the White House a group of liars partisanship has hit its peak. I am not naive enough to believe that the government tells us the truth about everything. But I do believe there are a lot of things citizens shouldn’t know. For a sitting Senator to expect the government to reveal any top secret document to the public is naive.

Our government is in a state of constant chaos. They cannot agree on anything, even when they do agree, they change their mind at the last moment. Immigration Reform should happen and is close to happening, but Republican Senators are trying to force a last minute amendment into it, possibly creating a problem with passage. Typical Republican move to push further and further in an attempt to get what they want at the expense of a bill not passing.

Republicans voted unanimously against Raising the Minimum Wage, voted against VAWA, voted against Gun Reform, voted for the Sequester, despite blaming President Obama. They are trying to cut SNAP Benefits, trying to keep Tax Cuts for the wealthy. The Republican party does not work for the majority. They work for lobbyist like the NRA, which funneled almost $400, 000 to the Senators who voted against the Manchin/Toomey Universal Background Check Bill. That was in less than a month.

To vote against American interests in favor of money is bordering on treasonous. Beck and Oreilly say that President Obama is out of control, but take 5 minute and review that facts. Leave the media opinion out of it a mg d review just the facts. The facts point out that Republicans are the root cause of many of our problems. They are the reason our economy has taken so long to recover. They are almost single handedly the cause of our National Debt, look at Bush Tax Cuts.

I know I have beaten this into the ground, but the Republican party is pushing itself into obscurity. They are taking a more extreme stance everyday. They reek of desperation and their attempts to make a scandal out of everything is sad. But they have the support of people who just don’t like President Obama. They don’t know his policies, they just dislike him. Sounds bogus to me.

Conservative or Crazy radio show hosts.

Today while running errands I decided to listen to talk radio. My mistake, it is something I regretted immeadiately. I caught about 5 minutes of Glenn Beck blathering on. It then slipped into Laura Ingram & I am sure the third head in this crazy assembly followed it up, Sean Hannity. They have to fire up the conservative base. Locally we do not have a pro-Democrat station. First I hear Beck rambling on about this great Pope. How he was a great leader of the church, a bright light in the Christain movement. These crazy sycophant actually believes God sent him here to fix America, that he is our great hope. Not only does he believe this but so do his loyal followers. I thought it was blasphemous to proclaim oneself a false idol or for that matter follow one . That is not very Christain of our Christain savior. Laura Ingram who I honestly believe is one of the most vile individuals alive. She is a bully behind a microphone. She does not care what she says, to who or who she hurts. If what this women said were true, thank god facts dispute about 90% of the insanity she says, we would be living in the Fourth Reich. She constantly says what an evil man President Obama is. How he is destroying America & treats anyone around him like trash. Seriously like, she would know, the administration avoids crazies like this. Then we have Glenn Becks man child Sean Hannity. He has eaten from the palms of our savior. He does not deal in facts, just lies layered upon lies. He was just called a hack the other day by a Congressional Democrat. If you disagree with him he attacks & does not let you speak. I get so angry about him I have to move on, my hand is shaking. There are other names Limbaugh & Oreilly but I just wanted to talk about these three nut jobs. The fact that Republican leaning voters listen to this nonsense really lowers my opinion of them. But then again the Republicans cant seem to do arithmetic. So not only are they the party of NO, but they are also the party of nonsense.
