The Senate will vote on expanding background checks to all commercial gun sales. The vote is expected to be tight, but it is inching closer to the 60 votes it needs for passage. The bipartisan legislation was written by Senator Pat Toomey (R-Pa) and Senator Joe Manchin (D-WV), is strongly opposed by the NRA. Although other gun rights groups have come out in support and more Republican Senators said that they will vote for it.
The Manchin-Toomey proposal would require background checks for sales at gun shows and nonlinear. But personal transfers would very exempt from such checks. It also calls for the creations of a commission on mass violence. The commission will study the sources of 2 ways to prevent mass shootings that have plagued the country over the last decade. Senator Chuck Schumer (D-NY) negotiated several changes to the initial Manchin-Toomey proposal. One was striking language from the agreement allowing concealed permit holders to carry their weapons in other states. Also to limit internet sales to 5 guns per year. He also worked to make sure there is a 72 hour windowfor performing background checks except for gun show sales, which will be cleared in 48 hours initially.
Citizens Committeefor the Right to Keep and Bear Arms has endorsed the Manchin-Toomey Bill. It is an unusual split in the gun rights lobby. Julian Versnel, director of operations at CCRKBA, said “We decided to back the legislation because we believe it is the right thing to do.” The group was founded in 1972, has about 650,000 members and supporters and along with the NRA has been a leader in filing major court challenges to halt restrictions on gun rights. Versnel sighted the value of a strong background check system for most gun sales and provisions that would prohibit establishment of a gun owner registry by the Federal government. Allen Gotlieb, chairman for the Citizens Committee said, ” If you read the Manchin-Toomey substitute amendment, you can see all the advancements for our cause that it contains, interstate sales of hand guns, veteran gun rights restoration, travel with firearms protection, civil and criminal immunity lawsuit protection, bit mist important is the guarantee that people, including Federal officers, will go to jail for 15 years if they attempt to set up a gun registry.”
Politicians seem to only focus on high profile tragedies when they are presented with a public demand to get something done to help American people. The spike in nurser rates in america’s impoverished communities have rarely been mentioned in the recent gun control debates. There is no real way to implement gun control in these areas because most of the guns are untraceable. If under new gun control laws people can still make private gun transactions without background check, then the law is for naught as this, along with straw purchases are the primary methods used by criminals to gain firearms.
Thus is a weak bill. It doesn’t get done what needs to get done. The BRA, Republicans, Tea Party and conservatives have defeated Democracy and 90% of the American public. It is despicable that Republicans vote against the people and some weak Democrats will do the same. The only way to change our system is to remove the status quo and replace them with new faces. We keep doing it until they do what the people want.
